Our Home | Living Room

Our living room has come a long way since we first moved in nearly two years ago.

First things first, it was the horrible builder-grade light pale yellow color (not sure why the guy that had it built didn’t pick custom colors). We didn’t do it right away, but about 4 months after we moved in, we painted it Repose Gray by Sherwin Williams. I do really like that it’s a true light gray – no blue or green undertones.

My husband completely remodeled our fireplace area. The built-ins and floating shelves were completely done by him, as well as the new mantel/fireplace surround made out of stone tile and the ship lap detail behind the TV. I am so lucky to be married to a handy man. He always does an amazing job.

I have enjoyed styling the floating shelves and change things around fairly often. Mostly I just wanted to display pictures of our children and some meaningful knickknacks – like that pink hibiscus bottle that we got on our St. Maarten honeymoon (once upon a time it had Caribbean rum in it.)

The pink and yellow painting is my own artwork and I just love the little Idaho-shaped basket. It was part of a Christmas gift from my brother and sister-in-law and I just had to display it to pay some homage to home.

In the cabinet on the left, we keep our hardware – PS4, DirecTV console, etc. as well as all of the video games and our DVD collection. In the cabinet on the right is where I keep all of our board games, etc. and a small overflow of books. It’s nice to have everything out of plain sight.

The rug is so fun. I was nervous when I ordered it, but I love it. It’s from Rugs USA. It’s shag and really pretty. It’s done a good job of not looking dirty (key with three kids!) The yellow quatrefoil curtains are from Kirkland’s online. They ended up being the perfect shade of yellow – not too sunny bright and not too mustard. I ended up finding a really long curtain rod to extend across all of the windows, rather than buying three individual rods. I think it looks much better like that. The couch is from Rooms To Go.

Here you can see my peacock chairs in my formal dining room-turned-sitting area. (We didn’t see the need to have two tables in such close proximity in an open space, especially since our eat-in kitchen area was big enough for a long farmhouse table.) Those peacock chairs were scored for free (I was on Cloud 9) and all they needed was a new paint job. I had meant them for my porch, but after putting in the work to paint them, I couldn’t bear the idea of leaving them out in the weather – getting mold, etc. I just love how they look in this space, and especially with that bamboo Henry Link Bali Hai dresser I got off Craigslist (painted pink by me.) It just gives that area a very colorful boho chic vibe. The rug in there is also from Rugs USA. You can also spy the small bamboo coffee table in the living area – I plan to paint that white soon. I think that will make it pop and look like new.

All of the yellow lamps are from Target years ago. The pillow fabric is called Ali Baba Tangerine by PKaufmann. It’s a really pretty fabric. I got the pillow covers off Etsy and then bought more of the fabric to use on my bamboo dining room chairs to tie the spaces in together.

That’s pretty much it! We really enjoy this space – it’s still open enough for the kids to play and although it’s decorated and put together, it’s still really cozy for the family to cuddle up and watch a movie together.
